A cesspit, sometimes called a cesspool, is a sealed holding tank with no outlet. Nothing is treated and nothing drains away, so everything that goes in must be tankered out. That makes emptying frequency the whole game with a cesspit: get the schedule right and the system is simple and dependable, get it wrong and you have an overflow, which is both unpleasant and a pollution incident.

Cesspits persist in the gorge for the reason they persist anywhere: no lawful discharge was available. On these slopes that can mean a plot too steep and too unstable for a drainage field, ground too full of old workings to trust, or a position too close to the Severn. A sealed tank fills at the rate the household uses water, which on the gorge’s hardest access — steep one-way roads above, no vehicle access below — makes a standing schedule with the vehicle position and hose drop already worked out far more practical than an arrangement made each time.
