A package sewage treatment plant treats waste water to a far higher standard than a septic tank, clean enough that the treated effluent may legally discharge to a watercourse as well as to ground. For many rural Shropshire properties, especially those on heavy clay where soakaways struggle, a treatment plant is now the most practical route to a compliant system.

A treatment plant often suits a gorge property better than anything involving a drainage field, because the binding constraint here is not percolation but slope stability. Discharging treated effluent to a watercourse, where one is close and the discharge meets its standard, avoids concentrating water into a hillside that is already documented as moving. Plots are steep and small, machine access down the narrow valley roads has to be planned rather than presumed, and on a listed building or within the conservation area the position of a plant and its outfall is a heritage consideration as much as an engineering one.

Mains sewerage reaches the main gorge settlements, but the properties strung along the valley sides and the farms on the plateau above frequently do not have it. Cottages built for ironworkers and tile makers, converted works buildings and isolated houses up the side valleys run on private systems, many of them old, undocumented and inherited with the house.

Ground conditions around Ironbridge

The gorge cuts through Coal Measures: an interleaved sequence of clays, mudstones, siltstones, sandstones, limestones and coal, much of it disturbed by three centuries of mining and tipping. Made ground and old workings are common, so what a trial hole finds a few metres away may say very little about the ground under the tank.

There is very little distance and even less time between a failing system on these slopes and the river, in a valley whose water quality is watched closely on both environmental and heritage grounds.
