The farms and cottages along the Edge and in the vales either side are predominantly off-mains, with a typical Shropshire mix of ageing septic tanks and newer treatment plants. Properties on the Edge itself often have constrained plots on sloping, stony ground.

Wenlock Edge is limestone, and limestone ground behaves differently: soils can be thin over fissured rock, and water that soaks away can travel far and fast through the fissures. That makes groundwater protection a genuine design consideration, and drainage fields near the Edge need siting with more than the percolation rate in mind.

The Edge sheds water two ways, into the Corvedale and towards the Severn Gorge, through brooks and through the limestone itself. Because fissured limestone gives pollution a fast route to springs and wells, a failing system here can affect water supplies well beyond its own boundary.
