Septic tank and drainage services in Whitchurch

Whitchurch is Shropshire’s northernmost town, an old market town on the Cheshire border surrounded by dairy pasture, meres and mosses. The countryside around it, from Prees and Tilstock across to Whixall with its famous raised peat moss, is flat, wet and thoroughly rural.

Public sewers stop at the town and village edges, and the farms and cottages beyond them run on septic tanks, treatment plants and the occasional cesspit. We cover the whole SY13 area and the border country around it.

Off-mains drainage in Whitchurch

North Shropshire’s dispersed dairy farms and roadside cottages are overwhelmingly off-mains. Around Whitchurch that includes properties on the mosses, where deep peat and high water tables made drainage difficult in every era, and plenty of mid-century tanks that have quietly outlived their design life.

Ground and soakaways

This is the wettest corner of the plain. Glacial clays dominate the pasture, and around Whixall and the mosses the ground turns to peat with a water table close to the surface. Conventional soakaways fail percolation across much of the district, so drainage field design here takes real care, and treatment plants are frequently the practical answer.

Watercourses and the rules

The district drains slowly through field ditches and brooks towards the Roden and the Weaver, and the meres and mosses are internationally important wetlands with correspondingly little tolerance for pollution. A failing tank near Whixall Moss is an environmental problem, not just a household one.

Access and practicalities

The land is flat but the lanes are narrow, and moss-edge tracks can be soft for much of the year. We plan heavy vehicle movements with that in mind, and hose reach covers the tanks a tanker should not drive to.

Buying or selling in Whitchurch?

Whitchurch serves a busy border market of farms, smallholdings and village homes, with buyers from Cheshire adding demand. Sales of moss-edge and farm properties here regularly turn up drainage surprises, and a pre-purchase system inspection is money well spent in this district.
