The soakaway, properly called a drainage field when it serves a septic tank or treatment plant, is where your system finally hands the water back to the ground. It is also the component that fails most expensively, because a clogged or collapsed drainage field usually means excavation and fresh land.

Percolation around Bishop’s Castle disappoints at both ends of the landscape. On the hill tops the soils are thin and stony over Ordovician and Silurian rock, so there is often not enough depth to build a drainage field into; in the valley bottoms the mudstones and shales give heavy, slow ground that drains poorly and waterlogs seasonally. The hills here are built of Ordovician and Silurian mudstones, siltstones and shales, giving thin, stony soils over rock on the tops and heavy, slow-draining ground in the valley bottoms. Percolation results are frequently marginal at both extremes, and depth to rock constrains drainage field design as often as the percolation rate does.
